How much weight can a paper bag hold?

A standard paper bag can usually hold 5–10 kilograms, depending on the paper’s weight per square meter, the bag’s construction, and how the weight is distributed. The quality of the paper and the manufacturing process are the decisive factors in terms of load-bearing capacity, not the handles or the shape. Below, we’ll go over all the most important questions regarding the durability of paper bags.

What factors affect the load-bearing capacity of a paper bag?

The load-bearing capacity of a paper bag is most significantly affected by the paper, the paper’s grammage, and the bag’s construction. The thicker and denser the paper, the more weight the bag can hold. The reinforcement of the bag’s bottom, the quality of the adhesive seams, and the paper’s surface treatment also affect how much weight a paper bag can actually hold.

Paper weight is usually specified in grams per square meter (g/m²). Lightweight paper bags are typically made from 70–90 g/m² paper, while durable shopping bags often use 100 g/m² or heavier paper. Kraft paper is particularly popular for sturdy paper bags because it has long fibers and withstands stretching well.

The structure of the bag’s bottom is another critical factor. A flat, glued bottom distributes the weight more evenly than a poorly supported bottom. The size of the bag also matters: a wide and shallow bag is often more stable than a narrow and deep one, because the weight stays lower.

You’ll find a comprehensive selection of bags made from paper of various weights in our lineup. Our selection also includes paper bags made from kraft paper.

How many kilograms can a standard paper bag hold?

A standard, simple paper bag can usually hold 5–8 kilograms when the weight is evenly distributed. A high-quality simple bag or a reinforced model can easily carry 10 kilograms or even more. The weight capacity of a paper bag therefore varies significantly depending on the type of paper and construction used.

In practice, most of the paper bags used by stores and shops are sized for a typical grocery shopping trip, where the weight is less than 5 kilograms. For this purpose, a simple bag is perfectly adequate. When carrying heavier items, such as beverage bottles or canned goods, it’s best to choose a bag made of significantly thicker paper.

It’s good to remember that a paper bag’s load-bearing capacity is at its best when the contents are packed evenly and the weight is distributed across the entire bottom of the bag. A single heavy item in the corner of the bag puts significantly more strain on the structure than the same weight distributed evenly.

How is the load-bearing capacity of a paper bag measured?

The load-bearing capacity of a paper bag is typically determined based on a standardized test in which the bag is filled with dry sand and subjected to a load for a specific period of time. In our product line, load-bearing capacity is measured using dry sand (kg/10 min), which allows for a fair comparison of different bag models.

However, it is important to note that the actual load-bearing capacity always depends on the bag’s contents and the conditions under which it is used. If the bag is filled with damp or wet items, the strength of the paper may be compromised. Similarly, products with sharp edges or those that distribute weight unevenly may strain the bag differently than fine-grained dry sand. For this reason, we cannot guarantee that a paper bag will withstand the same weight in all uses as it does in the measurement conducted with dry sand.

How does the durability of a paper bag compare to that of a plastic bag?

Plastic bags generally withstand moisture better than paper bags, but a high-quality paper bag is often stiffer and more stable to carry. A plastic bag stretches and retains its shape even when wet, but a paper bag stays upright, is easier to pack, and provides clearer support for the products.

In terms of load-bearing capacity, both materials can handle similar weights in kilograms when properly designed. The practical difference arises when the bag gets wet or is exposed to prolonged stress. A plastic bag retains its strength when wet, whereas a paper bag requires a coating or protective structure to perform well in the same situation.

For many stores and businesses today, the paper bag is the top choice for reasons of sustainability, not just aesthetics.

For many business owners, paper bags are also a more flexible option. Custom-printed paper bags can be ordered in significantly smaller quantities than printed plastic bags, which makes purchasing easier, especially for small and medium-sized businesses. We offer paper bags with your own logo starting at an order quantity of just 100 pieces, and delivery times are generally much faster than for traditional printed plastic bags.

When should you choose a paper bag made of heavy-duty paper?

You should choose a paper bag made of heavy-duty paper when the contents are heavy, have sharp edges, or will be used in a humid environment.

Typical situations in which a heavy-duty paper bag is a sensible choice:

  • Grocery stores and convenience stores where beverages, canned goods, or other heavy items are packed into shopping bags
  • Pharmacies, where a bag may contain multiple products at once and the customer’s perception of quality is important
  • Trade shows and promotional events, where the bag is carried long distances and also serves as a vehicle for the brand’s message
  • Stores whose products have sharp edges or are otherwise hard on the bag’s structure
